If you are reading this article, chances are you already own at least one electric car. And maybe you will encounter many questions, such as how to choose a charging pile? Which features should I need? Etc. This article focuses on charging electric vehicles at home. The specific content will involve several aspects, such as: what is a charging pile, several types of charging piles, how to choose a charging pile, and how to install it.
So what is EV charger?
An EV charger, also known as an electric vehicle charger or electric car charger, is a device used to recharge the battery of an electric vehicle (EV). EV chargers come in different types and charging speeds, ranging from slow charging to rapid charging. They can be installed in homes, workplaces, public locations, and along highways to provide convenient access to charging for electric vehicle owners. The use of EV chargers is crucial to the adoption and success of electric vehicles as they provide a reliable means of charging and extending the range of an electric vehicle (EV).
How many types of EV charger?
There are three types of electric vehicle charging piles that are common on the market:
Portable charger: it’s a device that can be easily moved from place to place and is used to charge an electric vehicle (EV) from a standard electrical outlet. Portable EV chargers usually come with a cord that plugs into the vehicle’s charging port, and they are designed to be compact and lightweight so that they can be carried in a trunk or stored in a garage.
AC EV Charger: it’s a device used to charge the battery of an electric vehicle using alternating current (AC) power. It converts the AC power from the electrical grid to the DC (direct current) power required by the vehicle’s battery. They typically have a power output of 3.5 kW to 22 kW, depending on the model and the requirements of the electric vehicle being charged. It usually takes 6~8 hours to fill an ordinary car. for example: HM series.
DC EV charger: it’s a type of charger used to charge electric vehicles by converting AC (Alternating Current) power from the electrical grid to the DC power required by the vehicle’s battery. DC fast chargers, also known as Level 3 chargers, are capable of providing much faster charging times than AC chargers. DC EV chargers use a high-powered charging unit to directly convert the AC power from the electrical grid to the DC power required by the electric vehicle’s battery. This allows the charger to provide a higher charging rate than AC chargers. DC fast chargers typically have a power output of 50 kW to 350 kW, depending on the model and the requirements of the electric vehicle being charged. DC fast charging can charge an EV battery to 80% in as little as 20-30 minutes, making it ideal for long road trips or when time is limited.
Please note that the charging times and methods may vary depending on the type of EV and charging station used.
How to choose the charging pile that suits you?
Choosing the right charging pile depends on several factors, such as the type of electric vehicle you own, your daily driving habits, and your budget. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a charging pile:
- Charging Compatibility: Ensure that the charging pile is compatible with your electric vehicle. Some charging piles are only compatible with specific models of electric cars, so be sure to check the specifications before making a purchase.
- Features: Now, the charging pile has many functions, do you need WiFi? Do you need RFID control? Do you need to support APP control? Do you need to be waterproof and dustproof? Do you need a screen, etc.
- Installation Location: Consider the location where you will be installing the charging pile. Do you have a dedicated parking spot or a garage? Will the charging pile be exposed to the elements? These factors will influence the type of charging pile you choose.
- Brand and Warranty: Look for reputable brands and models with a warranty. This will help ensure that your charging pile will last a long time and that you have support if anything goes wrong.
- Cost: Consider your budget when selecting a charging pile. The cost can vary depending on the charging speed, brand, and other features. Make sure you choose a charging pile that fits your budget.
